Let’s normalise changing our opinion once we’ve had access to new information! The only way we can learn is to be educated and there is no shame in changing your outlook once you know more. I feel like a lot of people, myself included on occasion, feel some type of way when proved wrong (whether you like to admit it or not) and we shouldn’t! It’s actually just okay to be wrong sometimes because we don’t know everything.
I personally learnt this the most at university as it’s such a unique environment. You’re meeting individuals from all walks of life and in my opinion, this is a great opportunity for growth. Being around new ways of thinking and having discussions allows for self-reflection and this could lead to you changing your outlook on a topic or reaffirming your pre existing thoughts. Either way, it can only benefit you as a person as you become more opinionated and individual. Saying this, though, it is key to stick to your morals and not change yourself just to fit in with others as so many people do. Don’t be scared to go against the grain because in most cases people will respect you more for having your own opinion, I know I do.
The uni environment is just one example of this, but we’re going to be meeting new people throughout our lives – whether that be at new jobs, events, or any situation with groups of new people. So, we might as well make the most of it and learn from others because at the end of the day, knowledge is power.
As they say, every day is a learning day!
